Samantha Long X

This is based off of Byzantine art and the Chiro Greek symbol for Christ. There's the parable of the Sower in there, too.

  1. First of all, you have such amazing detailed patterns! The only problem is I feel like some of it gets lost. Maybe go in and carefully render them more or add more value for contrast. Especially in the graveyard with the skeletons, and the rocks (I think that's what they are?) on the right and left side.

  2. i like the colors a lot! the composition is interesting, and the details are beautiful! I would only say that maybe the red tree's roots should come down off the page? just like the branches do on the way up? just my first thought.

  3. Hey, I love the values! And the x comes through very well. That is an interesting background, it captivates you and makes you want to look more.

My only advice:The thorns are so fun, why not unleash their potential by designing them more? they are evenly spaced=more boring. it would spice it up. Charley Harper is fun to look at if you want interesting design of natural elements such as thorns.

  4. This is beautiful! I love the intricate details and symbolism. The colors are also very nice. I agree with Ariel, I think that the roots would look even better if you brought them off the bottom of the page. I also think that the foliage on the tree is too flat, does not match the rest of the composition. You might consider adding some more details.

  5. Sam! So great!! The is so elegant I love it!! I would just say that the rocks on the sides of the tree look unfinished compared to the rest of the piece. I think if you just render those, give them a little more attention it will really help the piece!! I really like this though!! Great job!

  6. Very nice. I like it quite a bit, and don't think it really needs much tweaking to make it stronger. I would say that the only distracting thing to me is the area where the tree silhouettes the bird's head. It draws a lot of attention and seems like you stretched the trunk out to either draw out the bird's head or to avoid a tangent. But other than that i think its working quite nicely.

  7. Just lovely and so much to look at and enjoy. I would agree with the previous comments about the bird's left wing kinda blends into the background, maybe just make it slightly darker like you did with the rest of the left side of the bird's tail.

  8. I really like it! Very cool, lots of good details and design going on. Maybe I would add a little more contrast/definition to the main tree? That's the only thing I can think of- good work!

  9. Great colors and great contrast, but I'd like each quadrant to have a more individualized shape style, like the thorns vein g exaggeratedly different from the leaves, bones, etc. Play up the decorative quality you have here

  10. Samantha! Your work and voice are getting so strong. Holy cow. The details in the thorns, the branches, the birds...wow. Really a beautiful piece I think. I could stare at this for a good long while. The color scheme is gorgeous and I love that gold egg. I want to stare at it forever and see what is inside it. Symbolism is so awesome and you seem to do it well. The one thing I will say is it looks a little off balance at first glance - its symmetry is just enough that the white bird feels out of place. Maybe if it was up in the tree?

  11. Byzantine art is great. This has a really great composition and the colors and details work really well together. I wouldn't have gotten the symbolism or the parable without you telling me, but I can see it clearly now. I don't know if that's even a concern, but if it is and you want to do something about it, maybe just add a seed or two. I think that may be all it would need to read. Good work!

  12. Beautiful work! This isn't necessary, but I would love to see more of the red vines/roots. And the shape of the tail feathers of the bird isn't as interesting as it could be. I would love to see a little more design out of that aspect of your painting. Love the details!

  13. Breathtaking! It's so elegant. My bit of critique would be that the value of the tree seems a little too dark for the rest of the piece, but over all I love it.
