I painted this in oils, so it was hard to get a good picture without a little glare from the paint (top left wing). Also, I smeared my own blood on this.
Kelsey!!! LOVE!! This turned out so great!! I love how you handled the background and your bird is rendered beautifully!! The only thing I'd say (and this could be the glare) is that those falling feathers might need a little more contrast from the background...they tend to blend a little bit. BUT I love this piece!
I'm really enjoying the crackled texture you accomplished in the background, it really gives this piece a finished quality. I'm concerned about the ruddy brown of the arrow's top shaft above the head getting lost in the saturated red surrounding it. Might be worth darkening that up with a glaze to maintain contrast.
This is quite powerful. I like the idea, and I love the color palette. The texture is wonderful. I would love to see even more impasto with the blood. I love the way the wings are designed, and I wish the tail feathers were at the same level of care. Last thing, I'm confused that the right leg gets lighter at the edge. I feel like it should get darker like the other one does.
Wow, That's awesome that you smeared your own blood in there... you have now given blood sweat and tears to being an artist, eh?
I'd just check the anatomy of the bone on the left wing, I am not an anatomist so correct me because I may be wrong. But i don't think the bones would go upward like that, they would probably be more like the other side. you may have manipulated that for compostional purposes, but it seems off.
I love each of your pieces. You seem to have a style chasing you around and it is so you.
I love the texture that you built up! Your color palette works really well. I agree with Becca, the falling feathers seem to blend in a little bit. I love it!
Cool painting, I quite likes these things that you paint. One thing that catches my eye is the arrow head. It seems like the perspective is off a little. Maybe make it look like it is pointing back into the corner instead of curving back towards us.
I love the richness of the oils and the texture of them! Its really satisfying to look at, especially the red color. I really like how you added some green as an accent.
The bloodier the better, right? This is really great. The colors in real life are better, but you can fix that with another scan or photo or something. Very impressive. The reds are super nice. So is the texture. Super cool.
You rendered the skeleton SO well! And feathers. And background texture. Your work just keeps getting better. The only thing I am noticing is the value between the bird and the background are so close that it doesn't pop as much as it could - which could be a loss seeing as it's so beautiful.

ReplyDeleteI really like this piece a lot. I don't have much feedback on how to improve, sorry!

ReplyDeleteInteresting texture and design. I'm think the way you make the x is great. I would love to see more feathers falling down. :)
ReplyDeleteWow! very cool! I really like it. The only thing that feels like it might need a little work is that the tail doesn't feel as feathery as the wings.
